here are two essays i wrote for some commonwealth competition thing, which, by the way, is compulsory for almost everyone... in case you were thinking i'm some super ambitious bullshit guy. i'm not. the first was something i wrote at 2 am out of desperation, and the second is what i wrote at 2 pm some other day, cos i thought the first one lacked depth. in short, both are kinda crappy, but in case you wanna give it a go, just do so. don't complain to me after that... or wait, maybe you should. criticize me!(just in case you find the intro of my essay interesting, and want to read it in a less painful way, you could always ask me to email the damn thing. just in case... :( haha that was frickin out of place. but over here, anything goes! HELL YEAH!) Time: 11:48 AM BETWEEN WORLDS Smith Stark was cycling along the road one day when suddenly a car slammed into him from the side. Smith was flung off his bike and landed awkwardly quite a distance away, unconscious. The drunk driver of the car just drove off, paying no attention to the unconscious and probably dying boy in the grass. Thankfully, another driver was responsible enough to call the ambulance. Smith was in a coma. His parents were most shocked when they heard of the news, and they could not utter a word. They rushed to the hospital to see their son, to see if he was ok (he obviously was not, but that’s what they thought anyway). His mother cried when she saw him pale and unconscious on the hospital bed, looking so fragile. They thought he was suffering in silence. He was not. *** Smith awoke slowly, his body tired. He remembered cycling, then suddenly flying, but that’s where it ended. He rubbed his eyes and managed to stand up, and promptly fell down again when he saw where he was. ComaLand! He didn’t know that it had a name, but this is what he saw: a beautiful sky spotted with fluffy clouds, grass that was so beautifully green that he could not stop staring. And most amazing of all! Huge feathery looking things that resembled tepees, with windows and a door. But MOST amazing of all! Ordinary looking people walking around, talking to each other, then jumping fifty feet in the air before flying off somewhere else! WITHOUT WINGS! OR SPRINGS! Suddenly he felt a pair of strong arms lift him up from behind, and he whirled around to face a plump and cheery looking man. “Alo, boy!” “—Gah!” “Heheh! A newcomer! HEY EVERYONE! We’ve got a newcomer!” The people in the vicinity immediately turned to his direction, and quickly flew over, their murmurs of excitement getting louder as they approached. Then the whole crowd around him exclaimed in a most beautiful chorus: WELCOME TO COMALAND, YOUNG FELLA! Smith, from the time he arrived at ComaLand till now, had only managed a ‘gah’. This time he did much better. “HUH?!” A few of the people laughed. Then the plump man who had picked him up earlier put a hand on his shoulder in a friendly gesture, and started to explain. “This, my boy, is ComaLand. These people you see here are people who are in a coma back on Earth. Now, we don’t know how this place was made or since when, but there have always been peeps livin’ here, and they tell us what I’m about to tell you. In ComaLand, everyone is happy. There are no troubles at all, no bad guys, or bad weather an’ stuff like that. Plus, we can all fly and jump high! Everyone lives in one of those big feathery tepees you see all around, and you can find food and water up in the clouds. Ya just gotta look hard enough. Ah! but here comes the tricky part. Eventually, our bodies on earth will either regain consciousness, or die. If it dies, then you’ll suddenly find yourself in Heaven… or Hell… at least that’s what we were told by those before us. But if yer body wakes up, then you’ll have to say goodbye to all of us, and go back to earth. Ain’t this all great!” Smith looked utterly stunned, but slowly a smile crept over his face. Finally! He could enjoy all the time, and he did not have a thing to worry about. “SHOW ME AROUND, PEOPLE!” And so the crowd happily taught Smith how to jump high and fly, and showed him around ComaLand. *** Back in the real world, doctors were running tests. It seemed that it was not likely for Smith to regain consciousness in the next month or so, and keeping him in the hospital cost a lot of money. Smith’s parents sadly agreed, and took one last look at their son, before heading home. There was nothing to do now except wait. *** Years had passed, and Smith never grew old. All he did was have fun the whole day, and make many friends. Occasionally, when he was alone in his feather tepee, he would think about the real world, and wish that he could stay here forever. Then he would forget it all and find something to entertain himself with. Then one day, he found it slightly difficult to walk. His legs felt heavy, and he felt strangely weak. He tried to jump high, but could not even move. His body soon froze, his eyes open wide. He knew what this meant – he was regaining consciousness back on earth. *** A nurse in Smith’s ward hurriedly called a doctor in. Something was happening to Smith. After ten long years, he finally showed signs of coming out of his coma. Suddenly, his eyes opened, and he quickly sat up. The doctor asked him to relax, and to lay down awhile. He needed to rest (apparently ten years of lying in a bed was not enough rest for good old Smith). His parents were immediately called, and they burst into his ward, tears of joy streaming down their wrinkled faces. Smith was shocked and confused. Why were his parents so different? He put his hand to his face, and somehow it did not feel familiar. He craned his neck and took a peek under his blanket. Everything had changed! He started to panic. What had happened? Was he still Smith? How long had he been sleeping? Slowly the doctor explained to him what had happened, while his mother lovingly held his hand in hers, reassuring him that everything was alright. Smith calmed down, but then gasped when he realized that he was an adult! Before this he was a teenager! Now he was a twenty-five year old man! That meant finding a job, earning a living, getting married, taking care of himself! Oh NO! It took some time before he got used to things. He could remember how to talk, he could remember names and people, but he had forgotten how to walk. And one day, as he was in the hospital learning how to walk, he suddenly remembered his first jumping lesson in ComaLand. Then he remembered mastering the jump, and leaping high up into the sky. Then he flew! Yes! He could fly! Then, the realization that he could not do all those things in the real world crushed his spirit. He had such a wonderful time in ComaLand! However, he kept it to himself, and continued trying to walk. Then about a month later, he started thinking. He had not heard of people talking about ComaLand after coming out of one. So if he could remember, it meant that he was supposed to go back! Yes! It all made sense to him! He just had to find a way to get into a very long coma. He racked his brain until he finally saw the solution. He had to meet with an accident on a bicycle again! He smiled excitedly to himself at the thought of going back to ComaLand. He made great haste to find his old bike which was still kept in his room, then clumsily pushed it out of his house. Luckily, no one was at home. Then when he was at the road, he mounted his bike… and swore under his breath. He did not know how to cycle. Still, he convinced himself that just pushing himself forward while sitting on the bicycle would do the trick. He just had to go back to ComaLand! Determined, he pushed his way to the side of the road, and began pushing forward, till he could lift his feet off the ground for about a second, before pushing again. Then when he saw a car coming up from behind him, he waited for the right time, before swinging his bike into the car. There was a loud THUD! as the car made contact with the cyclist, and he was flung a good 10 metres away, before landing awkwardly on the field by the road. The driver screeched his brakes as he came out of his car, his legs shaking as he tried to run to the victim that now lay still in the grass. But when he reached the spot, he was speechless when he found a shirt and a pair of jeans laid out on the grass in the position a person would have been if he had been flung of his bike. UNDER THE MICROSCOPE I awoke to the sound of my alarm, and sat up and grinned. Today was my birthday, and I knew it was going to be a great day. I hopped out of bed and went straight to the cleaning chamber. I came out a minute later, and went to my wardrobe. I finally picked out a white hydrosuit to keep me cool on this hot day. Its not always that Earth’s orbit went a little off-course, but everyone was always prepared for that. I jumped right out of my window and landed softly thirty stories down on the road. I loved the road, and I think it was the coolest invention ever. It was made of a low-tension rubber compound, resulting in a material that could cushion great impacts. I walked along, looking around dreamily. Buildings a few hundred stories high, hovercars moving around in the upper atmosphere, people walking around… I loved this place. It made me so proud to know that human beings have come this far. Our current world population was only five million, because of The Last War; countries bombarded each other with missiles and bombs, destroying life and land. Huge chunks of land that were continents broke, while some parts disintegrated completely. Mankind had never seen such destruction and terror, and witnessing the extent of our misused power scared us into stopping the war. It took a hundred odd painful years to rebuild ourselves, but we finally did it. The new world is now ruled by a board of leaders, elected by the people for the people. The new rulers were just, and did well in re-establishing institutes of various studies, great laboratories for scientific research, and comfortable quarters for the dwelling of the people. Seeing what a mere five million strong population could achieve was amazing. Just two years ago, there was a large asteroid headed for Earth, but we managed to destroy it with our massive NOVA2 laser. After countless years of death, destruction, fighting and disagreement, we had finally settled down peacefully. We were powerful, and could do anything on our own, conquering every challenge that sprung up. We were unstoppable. We were almighty. I was so proud to be a human being. *** ▒▒▒ stepped away from the holding room and turned sharply to face ▒▒▒▒▒. ‘Why are you still keeping that system, ▒▒▒▒▒? ‘ ‘Because of the third planet. I think the inhabitants are interesting.’ ‘Interesting! What is wrong with you? Those two-legged beings are unbelievably disgusting! They kill each other, they destroy their environment, they have lousy leaders, and destroy their bodies for fun! From what literature and historical records we translated, it is clear how their species is changing for the worse. You know, I was even about to ask you to destroy the planet once they almost completely destroyed themselves, but I thought you would want to spend more time ‘studying’ it. Now, I think there is no point to your keeping it. I bet you they will behave like barbarians again and this time completely destroy their whole planet.’ ‘But they have not! They are still alive after such a great war. Don’t you find that amazing? And look at how much their technology has changed in the past few Darmings (the Glorbian term for a day, equivalent to fifty Earth years). That is an amazingly short time for such advancement!’ ‘Advancement? I think all their crazy inventions are rubbish! Tell me why they built a base on the moon. Can’t they take care of their planet well enough? And what about time travel, hyperspace travel and other such technologies we developed even before I was born? They haven’t even come close! If you ask me, the intellect of even the brightest of them is incomparable to that of a Glorbian suckling. You know, I am even beginning to think that their planet hates them. Look at how many times the seas have lashed out at their cities, how many times the planet spat out what it holds within… do you not see that?’ ‘Yes I do… but I think you are missing a point. Why are you only looking at their technological advancements when they have other things which are special? Remember the hypothesis of a more Supreme Ruler which Professor ▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒ talked about once? These species seemed to have once believed in a Supreme Ruler they call God, although many people have different names for Him. This is the first planet we have discovered with beings that used believe in such a thing. Don’t you find that a strange coincidence? That believe is dying fast, but I want to see what happens next. I can’t explain why… What if there really is a Ruler more Supreme than us?’ ‘▒▒▒▒▒… your obsession with this planet has driven you crazy! WE are the most Supreme Beings. There is nothing above us. The whole point of our existence is to progress technologically, and take care of lesser planets. THAT, ▒▒▒▒▒ is EXISTENCE. And as your mentor, I suggest you destroy this system immediately. I assure you, we will find other systems or planets more worthy of being rescued from galactic reformative explosions. As the most Supreme Beings, we must not waste our time on such trivial issues. I expect to see the room cleared of the system when I return after my lecture at the School.’ With that, ▒▒▒ moved out of the hall and out of sight. ▒▒▒▒▒ just stood there, staring at the planet. Was ▒▒▒ right after all? Was this planet not worthy of existence, and were they really the most powerful Beings? A storm was raging in ▒▒▒▒▒’s mind, and ▒▒▒▒▒ could not decide just yet. All he did was sigh. *** As I walked on, I decided to pop by the Niewss. Nothing better that reading up on what was going on in this small world of ours. I went in and took a seat, then put on the glasses that were on the chair. Same old thing, new community projects, some new invention, then something caught my attention. A man belonging to the Saints, a small group of people who still believed in God. They were the last of the religious people. This man was saying that we had to believe in God again, that we had come this far on our own, but we could not be arrogant. He said we had to thank God for what he has given us, before we go back to our old ways and destroy ourselves for good, or get destroyed by a higher power. I chuckled at the end of his speech. God was an idea invented by people a long time ago to comfort themselves whenever they were in need. Now, all we need is ourselves. Us human beings were the most powerful there was. We were sophisticated enough - versatile bodies, emotion, intellect – and could take care of ourselves. Everybody new that, except those Saint retards. I took off the glasses and walked out of Niewss. As I continued walking down the road, I heard people talking about the Saint guy and how they thought God was a ridiculous thing to believe in. I just smiled to myself. In my heart, I thought that I was lucky to be smart enough not to be fooled by ideas of God. All human beings needed were each other. We were the most powerful. *** ▒▒▒▒▒ had made up his mind. “I was foolish to even consider the existence of a Greater Being. There is no Greater Being. Glorbians are the Supreme Rulers of the galaxy, and we decide what happens to lesser beings. The planet I rescued does not deserve it’s existence.’ ▒▒▒▒▒ walked into the holding room and crushed the planets one by one. The solar system was no more. But just as ▒▒▒▒▒ did that, an alarm sounded. Two short whines then one long whine. A galactic reformative explosion! The alarm had never sounded before, and why should it now? ▒▒▒▒▒ rushed to the nearest Control Lab and spoke to the nearest scientist. ‘Is it a false alarm?’ ‘No, it is real! We don’t know why… we could not have upset the balance of any nearby galaxies, our planet was on the correct course all along. We… we don’t know what to do.’ ‘Make it stop!’ ‘We… can’t. We don’t know what to do. The explosion is expected to happen in ten seconds.’ By then, the message had been announced over the Intercom, and everyone was panicking. Nobody knew what to do, and nobody could stop the Big Bang. And during the last moments of his life, ▒▒▒▒▒, for the first time in his life, realized how blind the Glorbians were. They could not even save their life, and to think they called themselves the Supreme Beings… ‘Oh… God…’ ▒▒▒▒▒ whispered, just as the Big Bang annihilated their planet. ********* 1488 words |
